Alicia's Story

NEBRASKA CITY, NE - Alicia (York) Bergsten, 80 years of age from Nebraska City, NE formerly of Minden, NE died October 22, 2015 in Nebraska City.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, October 28, 2015, at 1 p.m. at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Minden with Rev. Donald Hunzeker officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Layton-Craig Funeral Home in Minden is in charge of arrangements.

Alicia was born May 23, 1935 to Austin and Madeline (Chase) York of Brewer, Maine. On May 31, 1953 she married Fred Bergsten of Minden, NE in the Methodist Church in Brewer. Fred had been in the Air Force and stationed at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Maine. This marriage was blessed with two sons; Rick and Donald.

Alicia and Fred lived in Maine, Nebraska, and Kansas. While living in Kansas she worked for JC Penney's furniture. Alicia was baptized with her sons and joined (Fred's) Lutheran church in Norman, NE. Alicia was a nurse at the Minden hospital and Minden clinic. She also displayed and sold home interiors and gifts. Later she managed weight-watchers in Minden and lectured numerous places for the franchise. In 2002 they moved to Nebraska City, built a new home and retired.

In 1998 Alicia surprised Fred with a trip to Europe to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary. They enjoyed their anniversary by seeing many of the sights in England and Paris. In May of 2013 they had their 60th wedding anniversary.

Survivors include her husband, Fred of Nebraska City; son, Rick Bergsten and wife, Donna and their sons, Josh and wife, Nicole; Jorden and wife, Becca; Dillon and wife, Leah; and Spencer and wife, Kristi; son Donald Bergsten and wife Donna Jean and their children Shawn, Nicholas and wife, Erica, and Travis, Jessie and Jenny; great grandchildren Emma, Levi, Haley, and Maggie Rose; brother Norris York of Bangor, ME and wife, Jenine; and sisters-in-law, Phyllis Gaston of Norman, NE and Sue York of Orrington, ME; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Ronald.
