- Family and friends will profoundly miss Alice "Ali" Pierce Balcer, 47, of Winthrop, Maine, who died Monday, October 31, 2016. She fiercely loved her family, including her two sons, husband, parents, aunt, siblings and their families, her extended family and friends, and her many animals.
She led life with unbounded energy, making the rest of us appear as mere mortals in her athletic abilities, mental and physical toughness, and her tenaciousness throughout all of her pursuits. An outdoor enthusiast, she took daily runs with her dogs, enjoyed kayaking off the Maine coast, and skiing with family and friends at Sugarloaf.
Born on January 21, 1969, and raised in Hanover, New Hampshire, and Brewer, Maine, she graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon School, attended Colorado State University, and then served in the United States Coast Guard, where she met her future husband Antonio "Tony" over 25 years ago. Their Coast Guard vessel traveled between Alaska and Hawaii. Ali and Tony later raised their two sons on Nantucket and in Maine. Passionate about animals, she worked for years at the Kennebec Valley Humane Society and most recently at the Winthrop Veterinary Hospital.
She is survived by sons Christopher and Andrew, parents Arthur and Deborah, brother Carl and his wife Lori, sister Elizabeth, and many other loving family members and friends.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2016, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, ME. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ali's memory may be made to Kennebec Valley Humane Society, 10 Pet Haven Lane, Augusta, Maine 04330 pethavenlane.org.
