Agnes's Story

Text size

Northport - Agnes Mary 'Babs' Babcock Ossenfort, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away at her home in Northport on Monday, February 12, 2018.
Agnes, or "Babs" as she was known to many, was born in New London, Connecticut on December 21, 1936. Babs was the daughter of Frederick W. and Daisy M. (Latham) Babcock and grew up in Lyme, Connecticut. Babs graduated from Old Lyme High School and New Britain General Hospital School of Nursing, from which she received her nursing degree in 1957. Babs was a registered nurse for over 50 years.
Babs married the love of her life, James H. "Jim" Ossenfort, on September 17, 1960, in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Family was the most important thing in the world to Babs. She and Jim moved their family to the Belfast area in 1973 and together, they raised their four children (along with several dogs and one cat) in a home that was often busy, noisy, and chaotic, but always filled with love. Babs was extremely proud of her children, and would practically provide a full resume for each one to anyone she met.
She was always a caregiver, not only in her professional life but in her personal life as well. At one point or another, she cared for her elderly grandmother, her father, and finally her mother. All were welcomed into her family's home and cared for without question or complaint. Together, Babs and Jim instilled in their children strong values, great compassion, an unfailing sense of responsibility, and wonderful senses of humor.
Babs had the "gift of gab" she loved to talk with friends and family and there were no strangers she made friends with nearly everyone who made her acquaintance. She was a shopper extraordinaire and a superb bargain hunter. She loved checking out flea markets and antique shops along the coast of Maine. She loved animals and spoiled her dogs in a way she never would have indulged her children!
Babs was predeceased by her beloved husband of 55 years, James H. Ossenfort, and well as her parents Frederick and Daisy (Latham) Babcock, and her nephew John A. Worrall. Babs is survived by her children and grandchildren: daughter Kristine M. Ossenfort of Portland; daughter Gretchen A. Ossenfort of Northport; son James H. Ossenfort II and his wife Kristine of Manchester, NH; son Jay H. Ossenfort of Portland; granddaughter Emily P. (Ossenfort) and her husband Steve Hogan of Raymond, NH; granddaughter Megan M. Ossenfort of Manchester, New Hampshire; and her beloved black lab, Thor.
Babs is also survived by her sister Elizabeth "Betty" B. Worrall of Norwich, Connecticut; her niece Robin W. Nelson and her husband Fred, of Lyme Connecticut; and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Claire and Robert Rettick of Westbrook, Connecticut.
A celebration of Babs's life will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Church in Belfast, UCC, 104 Church Street, Belfast, Maine, followed by a brief reception in the Parish Hall.
The family wishes to thank Dr. James Delehanty and Dr. Linda Tyer for the care provided to both Babs and Jim. They were not only their physicians, but also their trusted friends.
