Adele's Story

BREWER - Adele passed away peacefully on May 2, 2016, in Brewer, Maine, surrounded by her beloved family and friends. She left her loved ones with a legacy of generosity, compassion, and humility.

Adele was born in Portola Valley, California on August 24, 1954, to Roger and Virginia Anderson. Adele excelled in school, earning a full scholarship to Princeton. She was a talented writer and artist, playing several instruments, singing, painting, drawing, and designing and making clothes.

Adele joined the US Army in 1973. She was assigned to the Army Language School in Monterey, California, where she learned to speak Russian. She later served as a Russian interpreter attached to the National Security Agency. She was honorably discharged in 1977.

A vibrant woman, Adele was fondly called Dellie by her loved ones. She raised her daughter and sons in Maine near her family, where she was not only a mother to her children, but also a caregiver to her nieces and nephew as well their friends and neighborhood playmates.

Nothing was ordinary with Dellie - she loved to make things special. She made everything from after-school treats to Halloween costumes. She helped with homework and with growing pains and was a wonderful teacher and mentor. Picnics and beach days were a favorite as she taught stories, songs, and games. Her love for nature, animals, books, history, and art lives on in all her children.

Dellie was diagnosed with lung cancer in January, 2016. Although her body was taken quickly, her spirit endured and it was evident that the love she had spread throughout her life would remain in the lives of those whom she had touched. When she passed, her daughter wrote: Rest in peace sweet mama. I will never forget your tiny hands that were capable of so much beauty, comfort, creation, love, talent and inspiration.

A parade of people visited Dellie during her last days to say goodbye to their friend and "second mother", a phrase that was heard many, many times.

Those who remain to celebrate her life include: her children, James "Jamie" Anderson McRorie (Marianne McRorie); Katherine "Katie" Anderson Cook (Steve Cook); Charles "Chuck" Anderson; her siblings, David Anderson (Valerie Anderson); Bruce Anderson (Elizabeth Anderson); William Anderson (Heather MacGregor); and her best friend, Jerrilynn Sanford.

No service is being planned. Dellie was cremated and her ashes will be spread in her favorite places in Maine, Nova Scotia, and California. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Bangor Humane Society.
