HAMPDEN and BANGOR - Arlene C. Newey, 90, went home to be with her Lord and Savior May 3, 2012, at a Bangor hospital. Arlene was born Sept. 12, 1921, in Hampden, to Harold S. and Anna (Mitchell) Cole. Arlene grew up and was educated in Hampden and lived there most of her life before moving to Carmel for a few years, followed by three years at Roe Village and finally settling at Winterberry Heights. In her early years, Arlene was an active 4-H member and even won a trip to Chicago. She was a devoted mother, raising three children while working at the Hampden town office as tax collector and town clerk for more than 22 years, and selling Avon to her trusted customers for many years. Arlene was a Christian woman and was a longtime member of West Hampden Baptist Church. She enjoyed many hobbies including attending functions at Hampden and Carmel senior centers, cheering on the Red Sox, even owning a commemorative 100th anniversary Red Sox brick which she cherished. Arlene was a devoted 75-year member of the Grange. She held memberships and offices in Eastern Star Grange No. 1, Sunrise Grange No. 241, Golden Harvest Grange No. 33, as well as Penobscot Pamona No. 8, and the State and National Grange. She was a life member of Star in the East, Chapter No. 17. Arlene will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Arlene is survived by her loving children, Roger F. Newey and wife, Mary, of Winterport, Richard W. Newey and wife, Sharon, of Eddington, and Deborah A. Nickerson and husband, Lawrence, of Newburgh; grandchildren, Angela Walsh and husband, Matthew, Michael Newey and wife, Carrie, Andrea Bozzino and husband, Frank, Rhonda Newey, Jason Newey, Amanda Newey, Jennifer Nickerson and Eric Nickerson; and great-grandchildren, Jessica, Dylan, Meredith, Gunnar, Garrett, Parkerr, Frank, Thomas, Gracie and Maggie. Arlene was predeceased by her parents; and husband, Francis W. Newey, in 1988. Family and friends may visit 2-5 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a memorial service celebrating Arlene's life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 6, with Pastor Marvin Overlock officiating.
