CARMEL - Dorothy (McGown) Verrill, 83, died early in the morning of April 29, 2012, in the house where she was born April 1, 1929. In the hours prior to her death, four generations of McGowns, Verrills and Devlins visited her at the home that has provided care and comfort during times of celebrations and sorrow for many years. A lifelong resident of Carmel, "Dottie" was a graduate of Carmel High School and Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing, where she worked as a nurse until her retirement. Next, she enjoyed her part-time second career at Boyd & Noyes Jewelry store where she had worked while in high school. Dot enjoyed being a part of many Carmel organizations, always ready to lend a hand, share a good time, or cook one of her specialties. She will be remembered as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend with determined spirit and a spark for living. Dottie was predeceased by her parents, Mark W. and Hester (Carter) McGown; and her husband, childhood sweetheart, Norman W. "Timmy" Verrill. She leaves many stories of adventures, near and far, to be shared with her family and friends. She is survived by her children, Candice Devlin and husband, Patrick, Mark T. Verrill and wife, Cheryl, and Rodney Verrill and wife, Anita, all of Carmel; a brother, Allan McGown and wife, Lorraine, of Carmel; grandchildren, Joshua and wife, Lori, Sara and fiance, Dave, Megan, Ashley, Kevin, Timothy and Patrick; great-grandchildren, Aaron, Patrick and Mikelle; nieces and nephews, Jeff, Kristi, Susan, Thomas and Kate; her morning gathering group, Doris, Marilyn, Priscilla, Roberta, and Bobby and Jan; as well as many other dear friends. Friends may call 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carmel Union Congregational Church, Carmel. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery, Carmel. Gifts in her memory may be made to Carmel Union Congregational Church, P.O. Box 111, Carmel, ME 04419 or Carmel Alumni Association, P.O. Box 11, Carmel, ME 04419.
