WINTERPORT - Mr. Ronald Hayward Potter, 86, a longtime resident of Winterport, ME, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2014. He was born May 13, 1928, in Winterport.

At a time in his life when he needed guidance and discipline, he left Winterport High School at the end of his Junior year to join the United States Navy where he served aboard the destroyer, USS New DD-818. After returning home, he graduated from Winterport High School, and from Maine School of Commerce (Husson College). After school, he was employed as a Purser for Eastern Steamship Lines, Boston, and States Marine Lines, New York. He then worked for General Motors Acceptance Corp. Portland, ME., retiring after 32 years. He lived his life with honesty and integrity, and valued his friendships.
He was a member of Howard Lodge #69, Winterport, Scottish Rites of Bangor and Portland, Anah Temple Shrine and the American Legion Post 138, Winterport.
Mr. Potter was predeceased by a brother, Reginald, who was killed in action while serving in the United States Navy during World War II on board the USS Plymouth on August 5, 1943; a daughter, Rochelle "Shelley" Wolfe, died September 9, 2006.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marilyn of Winterport; one daughter, Rhonda L. Shand and her husband, Donald of Islesboro, ME; grandson, Eric Shand and his wife, Amanda, and their daughter, Ava of Biddeford, ME; grandson, Steven Shand and his wife, Trisha of Asheville, NC; grandson, Terry Wolfe and his wife, Erica of Eddington, ME., and a very special cousin, Donald Nelson and his wife, Rita of Winterport, ME.
As per his request, there will be no services or visiting hours. A private committal service will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery, Winterport. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Winterport Volunteer Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 724, Winterport, ME 04496-0724. Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Avenue, Hampden is in charge of arrangements.
