JONESBORO - Vergie Whitney, 94, died May 5, 2012, at York Hospital with her family by her side. She was a lifelong resident of Jonesboro until one year ago when she moved to Wells to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and George Perkins. She was married to Gilbert Whitney, and they lived together for 54 years before his passing. She was born March 11, 1918, in Jonesport, daughter of the late Ambrose and Margaret Elkhorn. Vergie graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1935 and from Washington State Teachers College in 1961. She taught at Jonesboro Elementary School for 19 years and was passionate about making a difference in the lives of her students. Vergie was a 64-year member of the Machias Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star as well as a past grand chaplain of the Grand Chapter of Maine. She was an active member of Jonesboro Union Church and a past master of Jonesboro Grange. Vergie will be remembered as a diligent worker who loved her family and friends, her church, and her community. She was a passionate Red Sox fan who put her heart and soul into managing the team from afar. Vergie is survived by two children, Linda and her husband, George, of Wells and Clark and his wife, Cheryl, of Soldotna, Alaska; her brother, Eldridge Elkhorn and wife, Barbara, of York; five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by infant daughter, Lois; sister, Dorothea; and brothers, Clinton and Helva. A celebration of Vergie's life will be held 3 p.m. May 11 at Jonesboro Union Church with a reception afterward in the Chandler River Room.
