NEWPORT - Stefan "Dido" Bidanec, 72, achieved peace Aug. 16, 2012, while under the loving care of the staff at Sebasticook Valley Hospital. He was born Dec. 2, 1939, in Poltawa, Ukraine, a son of Sergei and Natalia (Bohomil) Bidanec.

His family immigrated to Germany, where Stefan graduated from high school. He joined the U.S. Army in 1961 and became a U.S. citizen. He was a member of American Veterans and Lions Club, and enjoyed NASCAR, football and cooking. Stefan was an avid fisherman and gardener, and enjoyed playing with his grandson and teaching him to speak Ukrainian. He worked for many years for the city of Augusta and retired from Lithgow Library. He was very proud of his Ukrainian heritage.

He is survived by a daughter, Tatiana and husband, Jay Carsley, of Newport; brother, Mekola and wife, Alexandra, of Palm Coast, Fla.; sister, Helen and husband, Walter, of Chelsea; grandson, Aleksander "Sasha" Carsley; many nieces and nephews; and his dog, Princess. He will also be remembered by Tatiana's mother, Stephanie Bidanec of Auburn.

Graveside committal services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20, at Chelsea Heights Cemetery, Chelsea, with the Rev. Leonard Reiss officiating. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. Memorial donations may be made to Sebasticook Valley Hospital Building Fund, attention: Mrs. Julie Clark, 447 North Main St., Pittsfield, ME 04967.
