MARS HILL - Sarah M. Holmes-Burnham passed away May 11, 2012, surrounded by her daughter and son-in-law and granddaughter "Denise" at a Mars Hill nursing facility after a long illness. She was born Aug. 7, 1920, in Mars Hill, the daughter of John and Maude (Hartsgrove) Mahan. She grew up in Mars Hill and attended the area schools. She was a member of American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 118, where she held the office of chaplain. She married Guy H. Holmes and they raised their family of five children through many hard times. Sarah was noted for her great sense of humor and never was afraid to tell you what was on her mind. If you ever needed a good laugh, go, see and listen to Mom. She was predeceased by her first husband and after finishing raising her children as a young single widow, she married Aubert Burnham. She and her second husband ran their own small grocery store after settling in Alton, until he passed away and she returned to Mars Hill, where she enjoyed her birds and loved her country music, candy and rocking chair while overlooking the mountain and sipping a good cup of tea. In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by her sons, Donald, Ronald and Arnold; a grandson, Lance Cpl. Norman R. McPherson Jr.; a great-granddaughter, Sarah Holmes; as well as her parents, all her seven siblings, and many other past friends and great acquaintances. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Ann and her husband, Norman McPherson, of Mars Hill; and her son, Richard T. Holmes and his wife, Josephine, of Indianapolis; several nieces and nephews, 18 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care Sarah was given by Dr. Nicholas and all the other great people at Aroostook Health Center that made her life so very comfortable by their caring professionalism. We love you all so much! She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Parish of the Precious Blood, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, with the Rev. Raymond Morency officiating. Interment will be at Bridgewater Boundary Line Cemetery at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to AHC Activities Fund, care of Aroostook Health Center, P.O. Box 410, Mars Hill, ME 04758 or Ladies of St. Joseph, P.O. Box 298, Mars Hill, ME 04758.
