The Guest Book is expired.
Dickie married the love of his life, the former Jean Sawyer, Feb. 1, 1958, and they enjoyed 54 wonderful years together. Dickie completed a post graduate program at Old Town High School in 1957. Dickie and Jean were a loving couple, who were inseparable. Throughout the years they enjoyed many vacations traveling throughout the United States and Canada. The majority of Dickie's work life involved air planes and flying. As a teenager he worked around the Old Town Airport, which was managed by his stepfather, doing a multitude of tasks. Once he was old enough to fly, Dickie quickly established a distinguished career at Central Maine Flying Service, Old Town, as a top notch pilot and highly respected instructor, who taught many a budding pilot the correct and safe way of navigating the sky. Also, Dickie thoroughly enjoyed the several years he worked for the James W. Sewall Co., as a pilot in their aerial photography business. Later in his work career he served as president of Central Maine Flying Service leading it to a number of profitable years. Dickie also spent a few years as a successful car salesman and upon his formal retirement, he administered FAA written examinations for new pilots. Dickie was a former member of Old Town Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He enjoyed the fellowship of the group and the joy of working on their various projects. Dickie's warm genuine personality allowed him to make friends easily in any setting. His great sense of humor and "dry wit" made him a joy to be around. Dickie was especially proud of the service he gave to his country spending six years in the Maine Air National Guard and two years of active duty in the Army, being deployed for most of that time in Amberg, Germany.
In addition to his beloved wife, Jean, who passed away Nov. 3, 2012, he was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy (Glover) Dewitt and stepfather, Kenneth Dewitt, of Old Town and Florida; and brother, Alan Leahy of Florida. He is survived by his sisters, Joyce Smith and her husband, Del, of Winter Haven, Fla., and Westbrook and Barbara DeCastro of Belleair, Fla.; half sister, Deborah Hambright of Florida; step brother, James Dewitt and his wife, Gwen, of Ellsworth; and stepsister, Betty Emery of Newburgh. He is also survived by a very special nephew, Bobby Sawyer of Kittery; and niece, Sue Fox and her husband, Bob, of St. Petersburg, Fla. A special note of appreciation is given to Jean's cousin and wife, Don and Jane Sturgeon, and their daughter, Donna Conary, for all the support and assistance that was given to Dickie and Jean throughout the years, and especially during their recent health problems.
