CYR PLANTATION - Surrounded by his loving family, Mr. Normand LaJoie, 75, died peacefully and with great courage Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at his home. He was born Sept. 6, 1937, in Cyr Plantation, son of Gilbert J. and Marthe (St. Pierre) LaJoie.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years and eight months, Maxine (Ouellette) LaJoie of Cyr Plantation; and eight children, Monica Beaulieu and husband, Ray, of Augusta, Gilbert LaJoie and wife, Kim, of Van Buren, Sarah Sirois and husband, Marc, of Winslow, Denise Hayes and husband, Jerry, of Brewer, Dr. Norma Desjardins and husband, Paul, of Mapleton, Dominic LaJoie and wife, Rachel, of Van Buren, Julie Moore and husband, Steve, of Midlothian, Va., and Gisele Gendreau and husband, Scott, of Brewer. In addition, he leaves his precious grandchildren: 15 grandsons, 13 granddaughters, and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three siblings, Jeannine Gagnon of Van Buren, and the Rev. Roland LaJoie, SM of Tampa, Fla., and Gerard LaJoie and wife, Bernadette, of Van Buren. The family thanks the staff of the Aroostook Cancer Center and The Aroostook Medical Center who cared for him during his most recent illness.

Normand's passion in life was farming the land on which he was born, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He founded Grand Prix Farms and later passed on this legacy to his sons, Gilbert and Dominic; and grandson, Jay, who founded LaJoie Growers, LLC. He also loved being a truck driver, and for 50 years, he hauled up and down the East coast. Normand was known to many as "Superfrog," the harmonica playing truck driver. One of his favorite pastimes was the collection and restoration of antique tractors, and he was an active member of Northern Maine Antique Tractor Club. In 1993, Normand was recognized as Maine Potato Board Farmer of the Year, and in 2010 the LaJoie family was recognized as the Farm Family of the Year. Normand was a fourth degree 50-year member of Knights of Columbus and a faithful parishioner of St. Bruno-St. Remi Church, Van Buren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at St. Bruno-St. Remi Church, Van Buren. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, and 9-10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27,at St. Bruno-St. Remi Church. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation to Outdoors Again, a non-profit organization dedicated to the construction of a family-oriented outdoor recreation facility for disabled individuals at the following address: Outdoors Again, attention Ron Lemons, 661 Main St., Waterboro, ME 04087.
