EAST MILLINOCKET - Mary Helen LeVasseur died peacefully Sunday, August 24, 2014, at an elder care facility in Brewer, Maine. Mary was born November 7, 1926 in East Millinocket, Maine to Frederick W. LeVasseur and Melvina L. (Richard) LeVasseur.

She graduated from Schenck High School in 1945. After graduation Mary joined the Hood Rubber Company in Watertown, Massachusetts making footwear and other materials for the war effort. She returned to East Millinocket in 1954 and took a position with the newly-founded East Millinocket Federal Credit Union where she worked until her retirement in 1984. She dedicated many of her remaining years to caring for others, both family and friends, and always did so in a humble and lighthearted way.

Mary's legacy includes her one-of-a-kind personality. She had an irrepressible sense of humor, and was commonly referred to as a "pistol" and the "life of the party". She loved visiting with family and friends, and inevitably had a great story or new joke to share. She had a boisterous laugh, a mischievous smile, and an ever-present twinkle in her eye, particularly when engaged in such shenanigans as siding with the children against the adults when it came to secretly sampling desert before dinner. One of the first questions always asked at family events was: "Is Aunt Mary coming?"

Mary also had an adventurous side, always willing to take on activities with family like road trips, boating, fishing, camping or canoeing on the Allagash River. She was also a big fan of Boston sports teams, particularly the Red Sox. She took great joy in the three recent World Series championships after a lifetime of drought.

Mary was predeceased by her older sister, Kathryn Roach and two older brothers, Fred LeVasseur and Leo LeVasseur. She is survived by her niece, Ann Cole and husband, Wib, of Bangor, nephew, Jack Roach and wife, Dottie, of East Millinocket, niece, Sara Roy and husband, Richard, of East Millinocket, niece, Barbara Mooers and husband, Randall, of Houlton, nephew, Edward LeVasseur and wife, Jeanette, of Houlton and niece, Patricia LeVasseur, of Houlton. She is also survived by 18 grand nieces and nephews, many great-grand nieces and nephews, cousins, relatives, and countless friends whom she considered to be family. Mary will be missed immensely.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Christ the Divine Mercy Parish, St. Peter Catholic Church, 58 Cedar St., E. Millinocket, 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, followed by the Rite of Committal at the E. Millinocket cemetery, with the Rev. Joel Cyr, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the parish hall following the interment. Memorial gifts may be made to the church in Mary's name to Christ the Divine Mercy Parish, 58 Cedar St. East Millinocket, ME 04430.
