HOUSTON - Mary Ellen (Baker) Lewis, 70, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2012, in Houston, after a courageous battle with cancer. Although Ellen lived in Texas for nearly five decades, she always considered Maine to be her home. She was born March 13, 1942, in Bangor, to Richard Baker and Regina (Soucie) Baker. She graduated from Brewer High School in 1960 where she was head cheerleader, a member of Glee Club, and active in Se Beowulf, a community service organization. In 1975 she moved to Houston, where she touched an entire community. When family members, friends or neighbors became ill, Ellen was the first one there to nurse them back to health. After Hurricane Katrina, she spent days comforting and caring for evacuees. Ellen always put others before herself, and even in her final days was more concerned with her family's well being than her own. Ellen is survived by the love of her life, Charles Allen "Chuck" Lewis Sr. of Houston; and her children, Robin Patterson, Shawn Doughty and his wife, Karen, and Allen Lewis and his wife, Cynthia. She had one granddaughter, LaRae Doughty, who meant the world to her. She is also survived by her siblings, Joyce Remaly, Brian Baker, Lance Baker and Larry Baker. Ellen was predeceased by her brother, David Baker; and sisters, Louise Baker and Jean Walker. A visitation will be held 5-9 p.m. Friday, June 15, at Advantage Howard Glendale Funeral Home, where a chapel service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, June 16, with interment afterward at San Jacinto Cemetery.
