HOULTON - Lewis E. Webber, 98, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Madigan Estates Nursing Home, Houlton, after a short illness. Lewis was born in 1914 in Oakfield, son of Stanley and Winnifred (Chase) Webber, but lived most of his life in Houlton.

He graduated from Houlton High School in 1932. Lewis had a long and varied career working for Western Union, White's Drug Store and Larry's Automotive Store. During World War II he took a civil service job in the aircraft radio field at the Houlton and Presque Isle air bases. After the war, he worked for Petroleum Products, servicing oil burners. In 1949, Lewis and his brother-in-law, Harold Peabody, after much research, decided to open the first drive-in theater north of Bangor. That year they opened Borderland Drive-In Theater. They operated the theater for 30 years. Lewis and wife, Nola, also owned and ran a restaurant, The Milk Bar in Market Square, 1952-1956. After retiring he spent his winters in Florida until 2006. Lewis loved playing pool with his buddies and played up until a few years ago. He was past president of Houlton Rotary, member of Houlton Elks, a 50-year member of Monument Lodge No. 96 A.F. and A.M., a high priest of the chapter, a member of Commandery, and a member of Anah Shriners, Bangor.

He is survived by his daughter, Nina Vasapoli and husband, Ben, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Michael Vasapoli and wife, Sandra, of Magnolia, Mass., Nancy Vasapoli and husband, Alan Nashawaty, of Millville, Mass., and James Vasapoli of Tahoma, Calif.; five great-grandchildren; and loving companion, Elizabeth Childers. He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Nola, in 1996; son, Alan "Ralph" and daughter-in-law, Glenda; grandson, Peter Vasapoli; and sister, Lillian Bartlett.

A Mass of Christian burial will be will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, at St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church, Houlton, with Father David Raymond, celebrant. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Houlton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to , 45 Forest Ave., Portland, ME 04101. Arrangements by Bowers Funeral Home, Houlton.
