DEXTER - Joy W. Stewart, 91, died Dec. 6, 2012, surrounded by her family at Hibbard Nursing Home, Dover-Foxcroft, after a long illness. She was born Nov. 3, 1921, in Milo, daughter of Wallace and Lena (Murchie) Webster.

She graduated from Milo High School, class of 1939, and attended Kennebec School of Commerce, Gardiner. After graduation, she worked for Maine State Police doing finger printing for State Identification Bureau. After two years with the state police, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy Waves, and served in Washington, D.C., at Bureau of Ships, and became a mail carrier of secret files. On Oct. 27, 1944, she married Signalman 2nd Class Malcolm J. Stewart. In 1951, she and her husband moved to Dexter, where she helped him establish his optometry practice. Joy served on the board of Abbott Memorial Library and was a member of Christian Community Church. Her great love was spending summers at their summer home in Prospect Harbor.
She is survived by three daughters, Candace Mills of Lisbon, Meredith Andrews and husband, Robert, of Hopkinton, Mass., and Melodie Batson and husband, Russ, of Springvale; son, Lance Stewart and wife, Randy, of Dexter; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, including a set of twins, Cooper and Connor Vose, who were born Dec. 1, 2012. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Dr. Malcolm J. Stewart, O.D.; youngest daughter, Amy; granddaughter, Teresa Dow; and sister, Elizabeth LePage.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, at Christian Community Church, corner of Spring and Mill streets, with Pastor Lois Field officiating. Spring burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dexter Sunshine Club, care of Nancy Baldwin, 59 Acadia St., Dexter, ME 04930.
