SANTA FE, N.M. - James Stephen Bost, born Jan. 6, 1923, in Greenville, Ill., died Sept. 28, 2012, at his home. He was the son of Stephen Homer Bost and Gladys Alma (Dixon) Bost.

Jim had a lifelong passion for theatre. As an educator, he attempted to enrich the lives of his students by giving them the experience of working with some of the great dramatists - Shakespeare and Chekov on the one hand, Eugene O'Neill and Arthur Miller on the other. Without the inspiration and encouragement he received from distinguished professor of theater Dr. Hubert Heffner, and the unflagging support from his loving wife of 55 years, Madge, he could not have succeeded in his endeavors. Jim earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from the University of Illinois, and his doctorate from Indiana University. Jim was professor of speech and director of theater at the University of Maine for 26 years, chairman of the Theater Department and acting head of the School of Performing Arts. Before moving to Maine in 1961 he taught at North Texas State University and Ohio State University. His book "Monarchs of the Mimic World" was published in 1976. A World War II veteran, Jim served in the U.S. Army in Europe. Jim and Madge built a home in Chatham, Mass., to which they moved upon retirement. They traveled extensively both home and abroad, and eventually relocated to Santa Fe, N.M. Jim would certainly say he had a good life. He was blessed with a beautiful and loving wife, four remarkable children, and a long life on a college campus, living and working with bright, talented young adults in the world that he loved: the theatre. He maintained contact with many of his former students from the University of Maine long after retirement.

He is survived by his children, Stephen Bost of Brewer and his wife, Amanda, John Bost of Fairbanks, Alaska, Margaret Bost of Santa Fe, N.M., and Douglas Bost of Brooklyn, N.Y., and his wife, Carolyn; and grandchildren, Stuart Bost, Rowan Bost and Acadia Bost. He was predeceased by his wife, Madge Muir Bost; and his sister, Jeanne Elizabeth Wolf.
