STONINGTON - James Alan Rittenhouse, 86, died peacefully at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital August 28, 2014. He was born in Evanston, Ill. October 6, 1927, son of Esther Bechtel Rittenhouse and Jacob Bucheimer Rittenhouse.

Jim grew up in St. Davids, Pa. He graduated from the Haverford School, Tufts University, and the University of Pennsylvania. He worked as a mechanical engineer for Philco-Ford in Philadelphia, for 18 years. One of his projects was the Sidewinder heat seeking missile. Later, with his partner Joseph Albert, Jim had a consulting business, Telecommunications Associates, in the Philadelphia area.
Jim retired to live in Stonington, Maine, in the 1990s. There he painted watercolors of Stonington Harbor
and photographed many of the boats in the harbor. He was a volunteer for ten years for the Blue Hill Hospital's Med Alert, installing emergency response systems in Deer Isle and Stonington.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Caroline Smith Rittenhouse, daughters Sarah Shriver and her husband Kevin; and Kate Belczyk and partner Steve Dugan; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Shriver, Emma Shriver, and Ian Belczyk; and special cousin, Marcy Otley. He was predeceased by his brother George B. Rittenhouse.
In keeping with his request the family will have an informal memorial service in the fall.

Jim's death was sudden and unexpected. As he would have said, "Who threw that brick?"
