HAMPDEN - Hugh Warren Hastings, 73, died unexpectedly Nov. 21, 2012, in Bangor, after a six-year battle with kidney failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was born in 1939, in Hartford, Conn., to Morgan Wilcox Hastings and Miriam (Ingalls) Hastings.

With his parents, he moved to Morrill in 1946 and to Belfast in 1952. Known as "Hughie," he graduated with honors from Crosby High School, Belfast, in 1957, and then as a distinguished military student from the University of Maine in 1965. Hugh was a retired Army officer who enjoyed studying the Civil War and local history. In 1963 he married Mary "Molly" Mastick of Pennsylvania, whom he had met while on tour in Heidelberg, Germany, three years earlier. They married in 1963 in Boothbay Harbor by her Episcopalian minister grandfather. Mr. Hastings was proud to have served in the U.S. Army spanning more than 25 years. He first joined in 1958 as an enlisted man and then again in 1965 after he received his commission as an officer. His career included two combat tours in Vietnam, during which he was awarded the Vietnam Gallantry Cross, two Bronze Stars, eight various service medals and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1984. In retirement, he oversaw the administration of commercial large buildings in the Washington, D.C., and Maryland areas, many of which housed governmental contracts. Sadly, his beloved wife of 39 years died in 2003, and it was then that Hugh decided to "come home" to Maine in 2005. Since then, Hugh lived in Hampden, where he continued to practice his love of the Civil War and the local history of Bangor and surrounding areas. He found his love of fishing, and "reconning" for fishing spots with his son-in-law, Lonnie, and enjoyed being able to finally enjoy the beauty of Maine without the business of life getting in the way.

He is survived by his three children, Mary "Lisa" Hastings-Wilcox and her husband, Lonnie, of Hampden, Elizabeth "Beth" Hastings and partner, Dave Shaw, of Cheltenham, United Kingdom, and Scott Hastings and his wife, Karen, of Hudson, N.H.; his mother, Miriam (Ingalls) "Bunty" Hastings of Bangor; one brother, Michael Hastings and his wife, Sharyn, of Hampden; seven grandchildren, Morgan, Timothy, Mary, Lauren, Johnathan, Alec and Ian; one great-grandchild, Wesley of Maryland; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 39 years; his faithful chocolate lab, Beauregard; and many adopted pets through various family members.

Relatives and friends may call 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Funeral services with military honors will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 639 Grandview Ave., Bangor. Gifts in Hugh's memory may be made to Gettysburg Heritage Foundation, 1195 Baltimore Pike, P.O. Box 4629, Gettysburg, PA 17325.
