NEWPORT - Grace M. Brown, 89, Registered nurse, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died Sept. 7, 2013, at the Pittsfield Rehab & Nursing Center, following a long illness. Grace was born Feb. 8, 1924, in Millinocket, the daughter of John W. and Theresa (Pinette) McCleary.

She was educated in Millinocket and was a graduate of Stearns High School in the class of 1941. She furthered her education at the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1945. She returned to Maine and was employed at Eastern Maine General Hospital in Bangor where she met her future husband. She married Philip R. Brown on June 21, 1946, in Brewer. They lived and worked in Bangor for a few years where their son, Philip W., was born. Phil was transferred to Houlton while a salesman and in 1951 he joined the Maine State Police and was transferred to Danforth and she became a "Troopers wife." After two and a half years they were again transferred, this time to Newport where they made their home. Grace was a member of several local clubs and organizations. She especially enjoyed working on the local Health Council giving physicals and immunizations to the local school children. She was the charter president, and a life member of the Sebasticook Garden Club, a longtime member of the Newport Woman's Club, a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a Boy Scout merit badge counselor, and served as camp nurse at Katahdin Scout Reservation, BSA. She was one of the original Registered Nurses to be employed at the Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield, She was a substitute teacher for SAD No. 48 and was also a member of the SAD No. 48 School Board. In 1967 she went back to school this time to Eastern Maine Medical Center's first School of Anesthesia, graduating and passing her boards to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

Grace was a communicant of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Pittsfield.

She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Philip R. Brown of Newport; her son and his wife, Philip W. and Barbara Brown of Newport; two grandchildren, Peter Brown and his wife, Anne-Marie, of Falmouth, and Sara B. Brown of Portland; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Grace Brown of Falmouth and Zachary Robert Brown of Falmouth; two sisters-in-law, Iola McCleary and Geraldine McCleary both of Millinocket; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by an infant son, Patrick Leonard Brown; and two brothers, Bernard McCleary and John McCleary.

Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High St., Newport, ME 04953. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday Sept. 11, at Brown Funeral Home. Internment will be in the family lot at Riverside Cemetery, Newport.
