RALEIGH, N.C. - George Oscar Chase, M.D., died Sept. 5, 2012, in Raleigh, N.C. He was born Oct. 27, 1920, in LaGrange. Ruth Wilma Bowers Chase died Nov. 15, 2012, in Raleigh, N.C. She was born April 13, 1919, in Sherman Mills.

George was graduated valedictorian of Stearns High School, Millinocket, in 1938. He was in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945. George received a Bachelor of Science degree from Duke University in 1947. Grace graduated valedictorian of Orono High School in 1936. George and Ruth married May 31, 1944, at Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, N.C. George co-founded Dahl-Chase Pathology Associates, Bangor, with Bernhoff Dahl in 1971. After retirement he instructed nursing students at the University of Maine, Orono, and worked with the Maine State Medical Examiners Office. George was active in fundraising for Kiwanis, Bangor Band, Eastern Maine Performing Arts Center, Penobscot Theater Co. and others. A lifelong musician, he started performing at a tender age and continued well into his 80s. An active volunteer in Orono, Ruth was a constant at the polls during all elections, and at Orono United Methodist Church and Community Presbyterian Church, Englewood, Fla. With George, she worked ticket sales, ushering and concessions at local high school and the University of Maine, Orono, sporting events. Avid baseball aficionados, they traveled south with the University of Maine baseball team for their annual spring tours. George and Ruth loved long and well, friends for life and married for more than 68 years, separated for only 71 days before being united in heaven.

George was predeceased by sisters, Phyllis Brown of Millinocket and Rosamond Foster of Englewood, Fla. Ruth was predeceased by sister, Marian Sullivan; and brothers, Manuel and Buster Bowers. George is survived by brother-in-law, Irvin "Cut" Foster of Englewood, Fla. They are survived by daughter, Mary Lawton of St. Charles, Mo.; sons, Bil and Deana Chase of Westbrook, Dick and Beth Chase of Raleigh, N.C., George Chase of Springfield, Va., and Barry and Pam Chase of Milford; grandchildren, Kim Streicher and Kerry Lawton, Mike Chase, Megan, Anthony, Amanda and Anne Chase, Thomas, Sallie and Will Chase; and great-grandsons, Zach and Matt Streicher and Ricky Chase.
