VEAZIE - Fumie S. "Betty" Farris, 92, passed away Jan. 9, 2013 at the Maine Veterans Home. She was born March 23, 1920, in Hiroshima, Japan, the daughter of Chotaro Isogame and Kinuyo Morigawa.

Fumie was a caring, brave and strong willed woman who became a U.S. citizen in 1968. She retired from the University of Maine after more than 25 years of service. Fumie was a long time member of Veazie Congregational Church, where she enjoyed tending to the flowers, fairs, yard sales and bean suppers. She loved fishing, gardening, bingo and M&M's. Fumie was an avid sports fan who watched all of the New England sports teams.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by first husband, Akila Samiya; second husband, Jesse Farris; granddaughter, Betty Samiya. Fumie is survived by her son, Mike "Jappo" Samiya and his wife, Joan "Josie," of Veazie; three grandchildren, Donald Samiya and his wife, Lori, of Presque Isle, Howard Samiya and his wife, Tracie, of Bangor, and Mike Samiya and his wife, Amy, of Brewer; four great-grandchildren, Scott, Chris, Bethany and Jacob; four great- great-grandchildren, Noah, Colin, Alexis and Kristyan; three brothers, Toshikatsu Isogame, Sakae Kimikawa and Harunobu Isogame; and sister, Mineko Nohira.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Veazie Congregational Church, 1404 State St., Veazie, with the Rev. David W. Fox, pastor, officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments in the church dining hall, immediately after the service. Spring interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Veazie. In lieu of flowers gifts in Fumie's memory may be made to Veazie Congregational Church, 1404 State St., Veazie ME 04401. A service of Brookings-Smith, Bangor.
