BANGOR and SMYRNA, Tenn. - Eugene S. Potter, 78, died Dec. 31, 2012, after a brief illness. He was born Jan. 27, 1934, the son of William L. and Laura M. (Helms) Potter.

Gene was the youngest of nine children, and spent most of his adult life driving trucks most notably for J.J. Nissen Bakery, where he retired in 1987.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Pearl M. Potter; sisters, Bertha, Ethel, Myrtle and Ruth; brothers Bill, Frank and Ralph; and grandchildren, Adam and Noah. Eugene is survived by his wife, Lorraine (Reed) Potter; sons, Dan Potter of Levant, Frank Potter and his wife, Lisa, of Warrenton, Va., and Robbie Potter and his wife, Krista, of Levant; daughter, Laura Gardner and her husband, Randy, of Hermon; grandchildren, Nicole Hopkins and her husband, Mike, Eric Potter and his wife, Rebecca, Lindsay, Andrew, Jason, Ryan, Kaleb and Luke Potter; great-grandchildren, Max, Sam and Gracie Mae Hopkins, and Gabrielle Potter; and brother, George Potter and his wife, Elaine.

Services will be private for the family.
