The Guest Book is expired.
Bernice graduated from N.H. Fay High School, Dexter, class of 1945, and attended Becker Junior College, Worcester, Mass. She worked for New England Telephone & Telegraph Co., as a telephone switchboard operator, in Dexter for many years and was known in her hometown as BC. She was a former member of First Universalist Church, Dexter, and loved singing in the choir. After her marriage in 1954 Bernice moved to Carmel and helped her husband, who operated Garland Bros. General Store, North Carmel, for many years. Bernice obtained much enjoyment from keeping an immaculate household, inside and out. She also took much enjoyment in woodworking, as she did all the sanding and varnishing throughout both of her homes on the Horseback Road. Bernice's work was so good that she would be considered a professional. Bernice enjoyed reading the "scandal sheets" and you could ask her what was going on with whatever celebrity and she could tell you. She also enjoyed harness racing meets throughout the state of Maine and was quite lucky in winning, dressing up and going out dancing with Bud and loved to watch World Wide Wrestling Federation when it was on late night television. Bernice is a true survivor with all the different things that have occurred to her in her life and she has been able to make it through each circumstance with the support of family and friends.
Bernice is survived by her husband of 58 years, Francis "Bud" Garland of Carmel; daughter, Susan Starbird and husband, Brian, of Hampden; stepbrother, Donald Brooks of Augusta; brother-in-law, Everett Garland and wife, Mary, of Carmel; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and she will be missed by her beloved dog, Molly. She was predeceased by her parents; and older brother, Blaine A. Williams. Bernice's family expresses their heartfelt thanks to her family physician, Dr. Vincent E. Michaud and the staff at Husson Family Medicine, Bangor, for their compassion and excellent care.
A graveside service and interment will be held at a later date in the family lot at Highland Cemetery, Carmel. Gifts in Bernice's memory may be sent to Carmel Union Congregational Church, P.O. Box 111, Carmel, ME 04419 or to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements by Memorial Alternatives, Bangor.
