FORT KENT - Augustin Joseph Belanger, 97, died peacefully May 8, 2012, at a Fort Kent health care facility. He was born July 2, 1914, in St. Pamphile, Quebec, the oldest child of Auguste Belanger and Maria Vaillantcourt Belanger. He married the love of his life, Yvette Lamarre, July 8, 1946. Augustin spent many years working in the lumbering industry, and working as a fire warden with the Maine Warden Service. He also worked as sawyer and saw mill manager. His life changed abruptly after a saw mill accident; however, this did not change him. Known as "Ti Nomme," translated as small man, by his family and friends in Canada, he remained the always loyal, helpful, joyful and loving husband and father. Augustin had been a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, now known as St. Joseph, since he and Yvette established their home in Soldier Pond. He was also a caretaker of the church and church grounds for many years and sang in the choir in Latin, French and English. He was staunch in his faith and faithful to his beliefs no matter what life threw his way. His quiet, calm and positive demeanor made him the best of teachers as a devoted father, Pepere and great-grandfather. In 1988 Augustin was awarded the Father of the Year Award by the parish and in April 2011 he was selected, honored and recognized by Maine Healthcare Association "Remember Me." Augustin was predeceased by his wife, Yvette; a son, Leo Paul; his brothers, Real, Anthony, Noel, Romeo, Leandre and Raymond; and sister, Fernande Belanger Meville. Augustin is survived by his children, Herman and Bernice Belanger of Crouseville, William "Bill" and Sandra Belanger of Londonderry, N.H.; daughter-in-law, Ginette Belanger of Derry, N.H., Rolande and Dr. Paul LaMarche of Beverly Hills, Fla., Melvin and Ann Belanger of Soldier Pond and Miriam and Edwin Bard of Leeds; grandchildren, Rob Belanger, Renee Mills, Clark Belanger, Kelley McPherson, Kirk Belanger, Kim Tedesco, Ginger Simonds, Krystle Jordan, Master Sgt. David Belanger, Darel Belanger, Rachelle Ashmore, Tabitha "TJ" LaMontagne, Connie Bard, Kristin and Sarah Belanger; great-grandchildren, Zoe and Ian Belanger, Evan and Colin Mills, Jessica and Jenna Belanger, Alyssa Belanger and Geneva Belanger; stepgrandchildren, Aine Kruth, William and Sofia McPherson, Lilly and Avery Simonds, Ethan and Isabelle Tedesco, Hailey and Reeve LaMontagne, Abel and Eli Ashmore; his brother, Alcide Belanger; sisters, Lucine Belanger, Huguette Belanger Ouellette and Sister Marguerite Belanger; and a sister-in-law, Lucille Meville Belanger of Quebec. Augustin left a legacy not only in the way he lived but in the gift of his talents. Each child and grandchild received a handmade cedar chest, hand crafted and filled with love honed into every piece. Augustin always had time to help family, friend, neighbor or the stranger in need; help provided with a smile and the twinkle of his blue eyes, with never ever a thought of repayment. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday and noon-1:30 p.m. Friday at Daigle Funeral Home, Fort Kent. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 2 p.m. Friday, May 11, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Soldier Pond. Committal services will be after at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Those who wish may donate in Augustin's memory to Forest Hill Manor Activities Fund, 25 Bolduc Ave., Fort Kent, ME 04743. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
