LUBEC - Ralf Multhopp, 68, died on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013. He was born Feb. 17, 1945, in Bad Eilsen, Germany, the son of Gertrude (Lieberum) and Hans Multhopp.

Ralf came to the United States at the age of five and attended school in Baltimore. He received his B.A. and Masters in Social Work and Community Planning from the University of Maryland.

Shortly after their marriage he and his wife, Jennifer (Jones), joined the Peace Corps, volunteering in rural Paraguay for three years. Ralf was a public health worker and community organizer assigned to several villages lacking potable water or sanitary latrines. In an effort to combat disease he organized community residents, constructing wells and latrines where none had existed. His experiences in Paraguay and extensive travels throughout South America led to a lifelong interest in Latin American cultures and politics.

Upon returning to the United States he became an Urban Planner for the City of Baltimore, specializing in housing for the elderly and disabled.

Ralf was a founding member of the Baltimore Chapter of Amnesty International and worked on behalf of prisoners of conscience in Argentina and Chile during the dictatorships of the 1970s, opening his home to several as they were seeking political asylum in the United States.

He greatly enjoyed birding and hiking the beautiful trails surrounding Lubec.

Ralf served as Vice President of the Lubec Memorial Library Board of Trustees.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Heiko. Surviving in addition to his wife, Jennifer of Lubec are his brothers, Volker of Baltimore, Hans and Dieter of Cincinnati; a sister, Ingrid of New York City; and nieces and nephews.

Jennifer invites family and friends to gather at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at her home, 36 School St., Lubec, to share memories and conversation. She wishes to thank Downeast Emergency Medical Service personnel for their assistance and kindness during Ralf's illness.

Those who wish may make donations in Ralf's memory to Lubec Memorial Library, 55 Water St., Lubec, ME, 04652.
