EAST MILLINOCKET - Willis L. "Lefty" Doe, 91, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2014. He was born Feb. 21, 1923, in East Millinocket, the oldest son of Willis and Agnes "Tot" (Hersom) Doe.
Lefty was the beloved husband for 70 years to Nadine "Dimpy" (McLean) Doe. He grew up in East Millinocket, and was a graduate of Schenck High School, class of 1941, before serving in the U.S. Navy
from 1941-45. He was a gunner on Liberty Ships in the North Atlantic and Europe. After the war in Europe, Lefty's ship was deployed to the Philippines. Following his tour of duty, he returned to East Millinocket and worked at the Great Northern Paper Company as a Millwright, retiring on Sept. 1, 1984, with 44 and a half years of service. During his years of employment at GNP, he received two letters of commendation for saving the lives of fellow employees. He was secretary of the Carpenters and Joiners Union for many years. Lefty was a past commander of Feeney-Groves Post No. 13, American Legion, where he also served many years as Treasurer. He was a liaison for the American Legion Post No. 13 and the local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts organizations, and was a member of the Building Committee for St. Peter's Catholic Church, Cedar Street location, and served as a volunteer firefighter
and police officer
for the town of East Millinocket during the 1940s and 50s.
For over 50 years, Lefty enjoyed his fly fishing passion at Nesowadnehunk Lake. He fished with countless friends at the lake, with special mention to his friends Arthur Wakefield and Billy Robinson.
Lefty retired in 1984 to become full time Papa to his grandson, Christopher, his pride and joy in his later years.
The family extends special thanks for Lefty's wonderful care by caregivers at his home in East Millinocket and the staff at Maine Veteran's Home in Bangor.
In addition to his devoted wife of 70 years, Dimpy, Lefty is survived by his son, John A. Doe and daughter-in-law, Sharon of East Millinocket; one grandson, Christopher Doe and his wife, Samantha, of South Portland; a brother, John H. Doe and his wife, Carmen, of Millinocket; a brother-in-law, James McLean and his wife, Pauline, of East Millinocket; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Doe of Gloucester, Mass.; a brother-in-law, Bill Privott of Hope Mills, N.C.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by a special aunt and uncle, Mary and Arthur "Toom" Hersom; his sister, Josephine "Sis" Privott; a brother, Wallace "Bo" Doe; and members of his wife's family, Clayton, Dorothy, William, Ruth, Margaret, and Richard.
Friends are invited to visit with the family 2-5 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, March 31, at St. Peter's Catholic Church of Christ the Divine Mercy Parish, 58 Cedar St., East Millinocket, with the Rev. Joel Cyr, pastor, presider, and Deacon Danny Watson, homilist. Spring interment will be at the East Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Lefty may be sent to the St. Peter's Memorial Fund, P.O.
