William James Georgitis

KENNEBUNK and ORONO - William James Georgitis died peacefully May 19, 2013, at Seal Rock Nursing Facility, Saco, after a brief illness. He was born Jan. 3, 1921, in Hartford, Conn., son of James K. Georgetsos of Sparta, Greece, and Beatrice Betton of Portsmouth, N.H.

He graduated from Bristol High School in 1938 and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Bowdoin in 1942, a Master of Science degree from University of Maine, Orono, in 1949, and conducted advanced studies at Ohio State University. Bill married Mary Helen Wyman of Milbridge, Aug. 14, 1943, and enjoyed 59 years of loving marriage until her passing Oct. 19, 2002. Bill served in the U.S. Navy as lieutenant junior grade and XO on PT Boat 546 "Timberwolf" in the region of Treasury Islands in the Soloman Sea in the South Pacific in World War II. Bill worked as a chemist at Dennison Paper Co., Natick, Mass., and taught at schools in Sanford and Bucksport, before starting a 30-year career in the chemistry department at UMO in 1956. Bill retired in 1986 where he further enjoyed crosswords, reading, gardening, following college and professional football and hockey, framing his wife's paintings, and supporting friends as well as numerous charities.

He is survived by his five sons, Dr. James Georgitis and Debra of Kennebunkport, Dr. William Georgitis and Betsy of Silver Thorne, Colo., Dr. John Georgitis and Judi of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., Robert Georgitis and Kerry of Kennebunk, and Stuart Georgitis, Ph.D. and Dona of West Newbury, Mass.; and 16 grandchildren, Nathan, Jason - esquire, Jonathan, Elizabeth - nurse practitioner, and Kate Grover, PA, Dr. Emily Stanton, Dr. Nancy Linscott, Kathryn Irvine, Ph.D., Matthew - esquire, Jared, James, Abigail, Sarah Helen, William, Mary and Samuel Georgitis; and 12 great-grandchildren, Emerson Linscott, Hazel Irvine, Chloe, Theawren, Silas, Cicelia, Max and William Stanton, Jake Grover, Anastasia, Bronwynn and Alexandria Georgitis. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Mary Helen Wyman Georgitis; and grandson, Jeremy.

Bill requested only immediate family services with burial at Stanley's Point, Steuben, and wishes any donations to be made in your name to your , remembering best that he was simply your friend.
