BEALS - Sidney U. Merchant, Sr., 87, passed away unexpectedly at DECH in Machias, April 14, 2014. He was born April 12, 1927 on Beals Island. He was the son of Ulysses W. and Gladys M. (Beal) Merchant.
Sidney was educated in the Beals schools and worked most of his life digging clams, worms, and lobster fishing. He was an Army PFC during the Korean War
, serving stateside at Fort Benning, Georgia from 1953-1956. He was a member of the Beals Advent Christian and Alley's Bay Advent Christian Church, where he served as a deacon, treasurer, Sunday school teacher, and superintendent. Sidney was very proud of his family and loved to watch them as they participated in sports and was equally as proud of their academic achievements. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Celtics. In later years, he enjoyed going for walks around Alley's Bay and fishing in his beloved Eastern Bay.
Sidney is survived by his five children, Sharon Ann Baillargeon and companion, Ronnie Murphy, Lorena Faulkingham and husband, Leland Sr., both of Beals, Priscilla Anderson and husband, Andrew of Machias, Janie Emerson of Jonesport, Sidney Merchant Jr. and wife, Jill of Beals; grandchildren, Andreà-Jean Merchant of Bangor, Rick and Elizabeth Corbett and family, Adam and Rebecca Stanwood and family, Sherman Jr. and companion, Lyndee Bentley, Drew Anderson, Leland Faulkingham Jr. and wife, Ashley, Lawrence Baillargeon and fiancée, Bobbi-Sue Gray, Morgan Merchant, and Sidney James Merchant; great-grandchildren, Kelvin Emerson, Elizeah Emerson, Zaryah Merchant, and Logan Emerson; step-grandchildren, Jodi Hannaman and spouse, Dereck and family of Arizona, Michael Anderson and wife, Sandi and family of Machias, LeaAnn Crowley and spouse, Chris and family, Sandy Smith and spouse, Charlie and family, and Michael Faulkingham; sister, Lois Merchant of Brooks; brother, Rev. Jesse Merchant Sr. and wife, Bettina of Jonesport; sister-in-law, Lorna Alley of Beals; brother-in-law, Archie Alley Jr. of Beals; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; special friend and fellow Eastern Bay fisherman, Harry "Twink" Alley of Beals. He was predeceased by his parents, his loving wife of 46 years, Gladys Melle (Alley) Merchant; great-grandchildren, Kayden Sidney Hilton and Winrey Jean Merchant; two brothers, James Merchant and Morrill Merchant; two sons-in-law, Larry Baillargeon and Sherman Emerson Sr. and a beloved family dog, Barney, who was a great comfort to Dad after the passing of our mother.
At Sidney's request, there will be no viewing. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2014, at the Great Wass Island Cemetery on Beals with Pastor Joshua Blackstone officiating. Arrangements provided by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Homes.
