Sidney Schneider

HANCOCK and PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - Sidney "Sid" Schneider, 80, died Jan. 20, 2013, at Cape Coral Hospital in Florida, after a brief illness from complications due to Parkinson's disease. He was born Oct. 17, 1932, in Bronx, N.Y., to Lillie and Irving Schneider.

Sid graduated from Bronx High School of Science and attended City College New York. He was a mechanical engineer and inventor. His last job before retirement was at Panemetrics, Waltham, Mass. Sid and wife, Jean, lived and worked in the Boston area until Sid's retirement when they moved into their home in Hancock. Jean and Sid, being the ultimate "do-it-your-selfers," began building their home in Hancock in 1989. This project took several summers and multiple weekends to complete, and it still was not entirely finished when he and Jean were married in August 1995. It was a work of love and the roof was the only part contracted out. The reason being Jean said, was "because Sid likes to stand back and admire his work." Sid and Jean had two dreams, first to live in Hancock and second to cruise a boat in warm climes. In 1995 they bought the Fox Trot, a 34-foot cruising catamaran and it's dingy, the Two Step. They sailed the Fox Trot from Frenchman Bay to the Florida Keys to avoid the dark, cold, snowy winters. Nine years ago, after sailing to the Bahamas and most of Florida coast, they settled in a marina in Punta Gorda, Fla., living aboard. They also took time to travel to exotic places, such as Thailand, the South Pacific and other warm climes. Sid enjoyed many things: jazz, dancing, tennis, anything chocolate, sushi, the Boston Red Sox - except for last season, and dogs and puppies, especially Cricket, Master Pip, Big Red, Lance and Oakey. But most important to Sid were his family and friends, whom he loved to have visit wherever he was.

Sid is survived by his wife, Jean Cusick; his and her children, Sheryl Schreckenghaust and husband, Brian, of Waxhaw, N.C., Lori Proch and husband, Gary, of Glendale, Ariz., Karin Prizio and husband, Joe, of Brookfield, Conn., Michael Olson and wife, Kristina, of Sturbridge, Mass., Greg Cusick and wife, Sue, of New Lenox, Ill., and Jean Gallagher and husband, Bob, of New York, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren, Paul, Ryan, Ashley, Randy, Nick, Craig, Alyssa, Erik, Kirsten, Evan, Max, Lily, James and Nora; sister, Bernice Goldblatt of Boynton Beach, Fla.; sister-in-law, Eunice Phillips of Hancock; and brother-in-law, Rufus Phillips and wife, Story, of Chestnut Hill, Mass. Sid will be missed by many close friends in Boston and Hancock.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, New York City, NY 10163-4777 or a .
