Scott Gary Libby

ASHLAND - Scott Gary Libby, 52, went to be with his Lord Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at his home with his family at his side. He was born to Prudence (Flewelling) Libby and the late Gary Libby and graduated from Ashland Community High School in 1979.

He enlisted with the U.S. Navy as a Construction Mechanic with the Seabees in 1983, stationed in Gulfport, Miss., for several years before receiving his honorable discharge in 1988. He was dedicated to his military service and continued in the U.S. Navy Reserve, serving overseas during Operation Iraqi Freedom for almost a year and retiring as a Construction Mechanic 1st Class (Seabee Combat Warfare) after almost 17 years. He received many medals and ribbons for his perseverance and loyal dedication. He proudly marched in the yearly Memorial Day and July Fourth parades in Ashland to represent the Navy and the Ashland Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed speaking with others about his love of the military and even recruited other Seabees in his community. Scott was a hard working and meticulous man and enjoyed working as a mechanic. Many times he stated "I want to work." He worked with former Frank's Diesel, Frasier Timber, M&M Graham Farms, and Driscoll Diesel, and being a "jack-of-all-trades," worked many small projects for his friends and family. Scott was an active member of the Masardis Pentecostal Church, the VFW, Post 9699, Ashland, and was an avid volunteer for Boy Scout Troop 179 outings and events and the local food pantry. He loved being a jokester and always teased a smile out of anyone he met.

He is survived by: his wife of 27 years, Polly (Burby) Libby of Ashland; one daughter, Lynn Libby (Maine Air National Guard) of Ashland; one son, Andrew Libby (Airman 1st Class, U.S. Air Force) stationed in Ramstein, Germany; one grandson, Dylan Haley; his mother, Prudence Libby of Masardis; one brother, Gordon Libby of Texas; three sisters, Marianne Cobb, Laura Hafford and her husband, Calvin, and Peggy Morton and her husband, Kevin, all of Masardis; sister-in-law, Derla Brown-Libby of Florida; many loving nieces and nephews; and a host of long time friends.
