MILLINOCKET - Robert L. "Sonny" Vaznis Sr., 82, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Aug. 17, 1931, in Millinocket, the son of Frank and Emily (Subach) Vaznis.
Sonny grew up in Millinocket, and was a graduate of Stearns High School. He married Earlene Walters, and served in the U.S. Navy
during the Korean War
. Upon returning to Millinocket, he worked at the Great Northern Paper Company, from where he retired in 1993 with 42 years of service. Sonny owned and operated "Sonny's Restaurant" on Penobscot Avenue for several years, until it burned in 1976. He was a member of Elks Lodge
No. 1521, Donald Henry Post No. 80 of the American Legion, and Francis Elliott Post No. 4154 of the V.F.W
., all in Millinocket. He loved spending time at his camp on North Twin Lake, and especially boating around the 5 lake chain.
Sonny is survived by four children, Steven Vaznis and his wife, Patricia, of South Portland, Robert Vaznis Jr. and his wife, Jodi, of Millinocket, Joyce Landry and her husband, Michael, of East Millinocket, and Timothy Vaznis and his wife, Heather, of East Millinocket; seven grandchildren, Angela, Faith, Jesse, Brian, Tara, Mercedes, and Natasha; eight great-grandchildren; seven siblings, Fran Gay of Brunswick, Larry Vaznis and his wife, Gloria, of Florida, Frank Vaznis and his wife, Hazel, of East Millinocket, Ernie Vaznis of Millinocket, William Vaznis and his wife, Trina, of Millinocket, and David Vaznis and his wife, Angie, of Ireland; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will also be missed by his special friend, Jackie Casey of Millinocket. Sonny was predeceased by his wife, Earlene Vaznis; a grandson, Jeremy Hendsbee; and a brother, Donald Vaznis.
