HOULTON - Robert B. Matthews Jr., 85, died July 17, 2013, at his home, in the care of his family. Bob passed with dignity and never lost his sense of humor or the desire to demonstrate his love for his family. He was born March 11, 1928, in Brewer, son of Robert B. Matthews Sr. and Dorothy (Hammons) Matthews.
Bob attended Brewer High School for two years and then finished his high school career at Phillips Exeter Academy, from which he graduated in 1947. While at Exeter, he played basketball, football and baseball. Bob then attended Dartmouth College and graduated in 1951 with a degree in government. In his senior year at Dartmouth, Bob was captain of the baseball team. He also belonged to Delta Kappa Epsilon and was president of that fraternity during his senior year. Additionally, he was a member of the Interfraternity Council and the Sphinx. While home on his summer vacations from college, Bob played semi-professional baseball for Brewer Athletic Association. July 5, 1952, Bob married Patricia Morgan and they recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. Bob served in the U.S. Army for three years during the Korean Conflict
in the Counter Intelligence Corp. He worked for Chevrolet Division of General Motors
, owned a Chevrolet dealership in Houlton and was assistant superintendent at Southern Aroostook Vocational Education. Bob was a member of the Houlton School Board, was active in the Rotary Club
and served as president of the Chamber of Commerce. He loved baseball and enjoyed coaching little league. He was a supportive, involved parent and grandparent and enjoyed attending the musical, sports and academic activities of his children and grandchildren.
Bob is survived by his wife, Patricia (Morgan) Matthews; children, Robert III and wife, Dawn, Anne Cottle and husband, Andrew, and James Matthews; grandchildren, Erin, Mark, Lowell, Claire, Eben, Morgan, Elias, Samuel and Jenna; great-grandchildren, Jada, Laila, Max, Amaya and Khane; and sister, Betty O'Connell and her daughters, Linda and Cathy. He was predeceased by his parents; son, Thomas; and brother, Alan. The family would like to thank Hospice of Aroostook and County Dialysis for the care offered to Bob and his family.
