DEER ISLE - Mildred Violet (Shaw) Heanssler fell asleep in Christ Feb. 6, 2013, at her home in Sunshine. She was born Sept. 6, 1914, in Bangor, the daughter of Walter and Josephine (Harvey) Shaw.
She grew up in the Bangor area and graduated from Bangor High School in 1933. She married Frederick Heanssler in 1936, and moved to Sunshine where they raised their three children on "The Point." Mildred dedicated her life to the service of the Lord and the care of her family. She was a lifelong member of Sunshine Advent Christian Church and of Women's Home and Foreign Mission Society. She enjoyed helping with church suppers, cooking, boating, visiting with her campers, working in her flower garden and chauffeuring her friends around.
She is survived by three children, Donn and his wife, Janice, of Deer Isle, Sally and her husband, Richard Dunham, of Stonington and Beth and her husband, Daniel Lane, of Deer Isle; and by five grandchildren, Raegan Heanssler of Augusta, Larissa Heanssler of Deer Isle, Wade Dunham of Somerville, Mass, Andrea and her husband, Chris Wheeland, of Winooski, Vt., and Nathaniel Lane and his fiancée, Diana Rhys, both of Deer Isle. She also leaves behind two very special great-grandchildren, Asa and Nadia Wheeland; many nieces and nephews, who called her "Aunt Me"; and special friends, Susan Greenlaw and great-niece Deborah Williams. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Fred; and her infant son, Gerald. We thank her caregivers, Lauren Allen, Tess Daniels, Joleen Dodge, Kathy Kauffman, Belvia MacDonald and Heidi Shepard for helping to make it possible for our mom to stay in her own home these past years.
Pastor David Davis will officiate a funeral service 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Sunshine Advent Christian Church, Sunshine. Friends and relatives are invited to share conversation and refreshments after the service at the church's fellowship center.
