Maurice Lawton Smith

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Maurice Lawton Smith passed away after a long illness May 30, 2013, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Maurice was born Jan. 12, 1929, in Enfield, to Leo and Helen Smith, and was one of 10 children; seven brothers and two sisters.

He attended Lincoln elementary schools and Mattanawcook Academy. Maurice served his country after enlisting in the Army in 1946, serving in World War II, during the Berlin Airlift, the Korean and Vietnam wars, then retiring as a sergeant major in 1970 at Fort Devens in Massachusetts. During his 24-year military service career, Maurice earned numerous awards, including the Army Commendation and Bronze Star medals. He subsequently owned restaurants and worked in real estate before retiring years later in Sunderland, Mass. During his service career, he met Anna Theresia Vrzal, who became his wife of 58 years, after marrying March 18, 1955.

Maurice is survived by his wife, Anna; son, Timothy and wife, Elizabeth; son, John and wife, Karen; and daughter, Margarete and husband, Mitchell. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren. Maurice is also survived by his sister, Charlotte Brackett and husband, Fred, of Searsport.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Sept. 9 at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
