ELLSWORTH - Mary J. Skaves, 92, died Nov. 28, 2012, at her home. She was born June 26, 1920, in South Boston, Mass., daughter of George and Anna (Svencionis) Balukonis.
Mary graduated from South Boston High School in 1938 and attended Madame Kosakova's Designing School. During World War II she worked as a draftsman at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She married Francis P. Skaves and they raised six children. Mary worked as a seamstress while raising her children and did so into her 80s. She was an avid gardener and loved sharing the fruits of her labor with family and friends. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, decorating and making crafts for extensive family. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph's Church, Ellsworth.
She is survived by sons, David and wife, Kim, of Ellsworth, James and wife, Carolyn, of Norwell, Mass., and Peter and wife, Lynn, of Sammamesh, Wash.; daughter, Jeannie Taylor and husband, John, of Sussex, England, Mary Johanson and husband, Peter, of Rockport, and Susan Beers and husband, Don, of Canton, Mass.; grandchildren, Matthew Skaves of Veazie, Alyssa Skaves of Stonington, Conn., Christopher Beers of Miami, Lesley Beers of Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., Katharine Johanson, Laura Johanson, both of Rockport, and Marianne Stevens of Sussex, England; great-granddaughter, Mary; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 52 years, Frank P. Skaves; and her only brother, Joe Balukonis.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 231 Main St., Ellsworth, with Father Scott Mower, celebrant.
