EAST BUCKSPORT - Lawrence Adrian Appleby, 69, died July 24, 2013, at a Bangor hospital with his family next to him, after he fought a long hard battle with cancer. Lawrence was born March 26, 1944, in Howland, son of the late Laurel and Florence A. (Drew) Appleby.
He graduated from Hermon High School in 1962. Lawrence was a Vietnam War
veteran, 1964-1968, with the U.S. Army
as a SP4 and among other duties he was part of the Military Police. He was employed with Eastern Fine Paper Mill, South Brewer, for 35 years. Besides being a devoted husband, father, uncle, Papa and great-Papa, he was also considered "Dad" and a good friend by many. He loved to put together model cars, puzzles, play cards, go camping, build things, tinkering on vehicles, helping others, talking about his childhood and different events in his life, and enjoying spending every moment he could with his family and friends.
Lawrence is survived by his wife of 41 years, Erlene (Perkins) Appleby of East Bucksport; daughter, Danielle Millett and husband, Mark, of Bucksport; two sons, David Appleby and wife, Christy, of Bucksport and Alan Holyoke of Hollis Center; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two nieces and two nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his parent's two brothers, Allen and Harold Appleby; sister, Clarice (Appleby) Hord; and in January 2013 his older daughter, Amy (Appleby) Hamm. The family would like to thank Dr. Lee from the VA Hospital Togus, Dr. Sandra Kitchen from the Bangor VA Clinic, Dr. Swalec from Cancer Care of Maine, and the doctors and nurses of Eastern Maine Medical Center for their compassionate love and care of Lawrence.
Family and friends will gather for visitation 5-7 p.m. Aug. 2, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Aug. 14, at Hillside Cemetery, East Bucksport, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating.
