BIDDEFORD - Pastor Joel Ashton McLain Sr., 77, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, from injuries he sustained in a car accident. He was born Aug. 19, 1936, in Rockland, a son of Ashton I. and Beatrix (Clements) McLain.
He attended schools in Rockland and was a 1954 graduate of Rockland High School. After high school Joel enlisted in the U.S. Air Force
and served our country for 10 years. On Oct. 16, 1955, he married Pauline Nash. She predeceased him in 2009. Joel worked most of his life in the food service business, cooking and owning restaurants. He was ordained into the ministry in 1963 and went on to pioneer pastor throughout the state of Maine. He pastored for the last 31 years at Victory Chapel in Biddeford. He graduated from the Tactical Air Command NCO Preporatory School. He served as an Aircraft Control and Warning Operator, earning the praise and acknowledgment of his superiors and being nominated as Airman of the Month. Joel was President of Beulah Fellowship Camp in Canterbury, N.H. He was a very good handy man who liked using his hands and keeping busy. Those who knew him through the Victory Chapel loved and cared for him very much and he was very kind and generous to anyone he knew. On Aug. 18, 2012, he married Maxine Vance in Biddeford.
Besides his parents and first wife he was predeceased by one daughter, Sandra French; and three grandchildren, Joel A. McLain III, Tasha McLain and Chad French.
He is survived by one daughter, Beatrix Tucci and her husband, Daniel, of Portland; four sons, Jeff McLain Sr. and his wife, Susan, of Newburg, Joel McLain Jr. and his wife, Robin, of Waterville, Philip McLain Sr. and his wife, Brenda, of East Waterboro and Timothy McLain Sr. and his wife, Marhon, of Biddeford; one brother, William McLain and his wife, Margaret, of Tennessee; 24 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two stepsons.
Visiting hours will be 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Sept., 8, at Hope Memorial Chapel. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, at The Victory Chapel, Biddeford.
