BELFAST - Sgt. Maj. James "Jim" Norwood Green, 86, of Prospect Harbor, passed away Feb. 13, 2013, at Harbor Hill, Belfast, after a brief illness. Jim Green was born in Mount Vernon, Ga., an only child of James B. and Myrtle A. Green.
He joined the Army
in 1942, and was stationed in the Philippines, France and Germany among other areas. He retired from the military in 1966. He moved to Birch Harbor in 1973 and worked in Civil Service as the contractor for building and maintenance at Winter Harbor Naval Station. He proudly joined the Masons in 1973. After "retiring" from Civil Service, he started his own business, Birch Harbor Home Improvements. He and Sylvia made a hobby of remodeling each house they lived in. Jim was always a hardworking man and good provider for his family. He taught his skill and knowledge of woodworking to many people he worked with. He was well respected and looked a person in the eye with a firm handshake. He and Sylvia blended their family when they married in 1968, and raised each other's children as their own. They also gave love and care to families and especially to the children who lived near them. They had, what one would refer to, an open door policy to their homes and hearts.
He was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Sylvia "Snoodie" (Rice), May 30, 2012, less than nine months ago. He is survived by James Green Jr. and wife, Linda, of Swords Creek, Va., Michael Green and wife, Pat, of Pickerington, Ohio, Alice Montgomery and husband, Bill, of Missouri, Thomas Green and wife, Eleanor, of Apex, N.C., Donald Peterson of Apex, N.C., Robin Peterson-Lewis and husband, John, of Belfast, and Penny Green-Dwelley and husband, David, of Vassalboro; along with many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in the spring, with a future announcement. Any donations are asked to be sent to Birch Harbor Church, care of Susan Scott, 65 East Schoodic Drive, Birch Harbor, ME 04613. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
