LUBEC - Iley Herbert Walston, 92, died peacefully Nov. 2, 2012, at a Machias hospital after a couple years of poor health. He was born May 19, 1920, in Mena, Ark., son of the late Charles and Louella (Hancock) Walston.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in March 1942, attached to the 26th Reconnaissance Troop as a radio operator aboard armored cars in the European Theater. He was discharged in October 1945 as the rank of sergeant; his honors included the Bronze Star
with two oak leaf clusters. Iley married June Sprague in 1945 and settled in Machias after his discharge from the service. He became Machias' first town manager, serving for three years, and then moved to Lubec to become Lubec's first town manager. He embarked into several businesses, including trucking and the poultry industry. After retirement he remained active in local government until his death, last being a member of the revolving loan fund. He was a recipient of a lifetime community service award from the town of Lubec. He was a 50-year member of Lubec American Legion and a charter member of Lubec Lions Club.
He is survived by a son, Gregory Walston and wife, Dawn; two grandsons, Justin Walston and wife, Brandi, and Damien Walston; and great-grandchildren, Cade, Chance, Emerson, Pierce and Kase. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, June; a son, Zachary; and a grandson, Lucas.
Graveside services with full military honors will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Greenlawn Cemetery, Lubec.
