MONROE - Ida R. Mitchell, 92, passed away Dec. 26, 2012, at Waldo County General Hospital, Belfast. She was born Oct. 18, 1920, in Whitepoint, Cape Britain Island, Nova Scotia, the daughter of the late Thomas and Hattie (MacIntosh) Williams.
She moved to Appleton Ridge at the age of 4 and resided in Appleton and Searsmont raising her family until 1960 when she moved to Monroe. Ida held various jobs until she and her son, Reggie, purchased Monroe General Store working there from 1964 until 1982 when she retired. While working at the store, Ida was the Monroe town clerk and also the correspondent for the Republican Journal. She was an avid deer and partridge hunter always enjoying the outdoors continuing into her 80s. In her earlier years she enjoyed substitute teaching in Appleton. She adored her home on Jackson Road, known to her as "Heaven on Earth." She was a member of the Extension. Family was always Ida's first love and passion.
She is survived by her son, Reginald Mitchell of Monroe; her nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother, MacKenzie; her sister, Mary; her daughter, Rachel Oxley; her son, Alwood Mitchell Jr.; and the father of her children, Alwood Mitchell Sr. Reggie would like to thank his children, Aaron, Kim and Kirk and her dedicated team of caregivers. Also special thanks to many friends and neighbors, especially her "two sisters," Betty McAlpine and Olive Couturier.
