LINCOLN and WILMINGTON, Mass. - Helen A. DelTorto, 92, wife of the late Joseph DelTorto, died peacefully Feb. 6, 2013, at her home. She was born Dec. 7, 1920, in Boston, the daughter of William and Katherine (Mateiunas) Witkum.
Helen was raised and schooled in Wilmington, Mass. After graduating high school, she moved to New York, where she married Joseph DelTorto, a chief warrant officer in the U.S. Coast Guard. For the next few years Helen lived in such places as Cape Cod, Mass., and Wildwood, N.J. While her husband continued to serve our country overseas, she established a home for her family in Wilmington, Mass. She then became a civilian employee for the U.S. Coast Guard, and served in such a capacity for 29 years. Helen and her husband Joseph were the owner/operators of General Knox Hotel and Restaurant, Thomaston. For more than 20 years Helen dedicated her time to volunteering and teaching CCD at St. Thomas Church, Wilmington, Mass. In late 1980, Helen accepted the position of executive secretary of Boston Marine Society. Helen went above and beyond her role as executive secretary, and quickly became known as the "go-to" person. Seemingly, every desk in the maritime industry from the Coast Guard, maritime academies to shipping companies, had Helen's number and knew her as the one to call to get things done. Helen remained a loyal employee for more than 27 years. Helen retired from the Marine Society in 2008 and moved to Lincoln, to be close and cared for by her granddaughter, Elizabeth.
She is survived by three grandchildren, Elizabeth DelTorto Lujan of Lincoln, Joseph A. DelTorto of Wilmington, Mass., and Katherine H. DelTorto of Cape Cod, Mass.; and seven great-grandchildren, Haley Lujan, Theresa Clifford, Courtney Lujan, Devan Lujan, Brayden Lujan, Michael Ravech and Joseph Pyle. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; and her son, Anthony DelTorto.
Services will be held in Wilmington, Mass., at a later date. Those who wish may sign an online guest register and leave written condolences at www.clayfuneralhome.com
