Harriet (Hyde) Sands

BANGOR - Harriet (Hyde) Sands, 96, died Oct. 14, 2012, at her home with family. She was born Feb. 20, 1916, in Syracuse, N.Y., daughter of Charles Salem and Clara (Baylis) Hyde.

Harriet graduated from Goodyear Burlingame Private High School in New York, in 1933 and from Wheelock College in 1936. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in education 1939 from Boston University and a Master of Education degree in 1949 from Harvard University. She was married Sept. 30, 1950, to Dr. Kenneth Fillman Sands of Boston. Harriet was a kindergarten teacher and director of Walpole Private Kindergarten and Nursery School, Walpole, Mass., from 1936 to 1949. She was the co-founder and director of Camp Metacomet Country Day Camp from 1937 to 1949, then a child psychologist consulting at Boston Children's Hospital, Boston Center for Blind Children and Massachusetts Hospital School from 1946 to 1965. Harriet was a consulting psychologist at Milton Academy, Milton, Mass., from 1963 to 1982, and a school psychologist at Buckingham, Browne and Nichols School, Cambridge, Mass., from 1963 to 1987. Harriet was a member of the American Psychological Association. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, bird watching and reading. Harriet, known as "Mimi" later in life, was a selfless and devoted wife and mother, and a beloved school psychologist. Widowed in 1959 with four children, age 5 and under, she devoted her life to their upbringing, which resulted in all four enjoying successful careers, lasting marriages and close families. Retiring to Blue Hill, she volunteered at Blue Hill Public Library and Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, and enjoyed her quilting group friends.

Harriet was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Kenneth F. Sands; and brothers, Charles S. Hyde Jr. and Robert B. Hyde. She is survived by son, Christopher H. Sands and his wife, Betsy D. Sands, of Winchester, Mass.; son, Jonathan W. Sands and his wife, Peggy Owen Sands, of Burlington, Vt.; daughter, Carolyn S. Eaton and her husband, George F. Eaton II, of Orono; son, Dr. Kenneth E. F. Sands and his wife, Joan M. Sands, of Weston, Mass.; grandchildren, Allison H. Eaton, Geoffrey R. Eaton, Matthew D. Sands, Jennifer H. Sands, Katrina K. Sands, Trevor C. Sands, Kristen W. Sands and Gwendolyn T. Sands; and several nephews.

A private family service will be held in Massachusetts.
