Francis V. Donnelly

PORTLAND - Francis V. Donnelly, 95, formerly of Squire Court, Oakville, Conn., passed away peacefully Feb. 25, 2013, surrounded by his family at his home in Maine. He was the husband of Blanche (Germano) Donnelly, who predeceased him in 2002 after 58 years of marriage. Fran D. was born Feb. 8, 1918, in Waterbury, Conn., the youngest child of Patrick and Catherine (Fitzgerald) Donnelly.

He was very active in AA as a friend of Bill W. for the past 43 years. There are many people in Connecticut and Maine whose lives were changed for the better by his work in AA. Fran was a World War II Army veteran. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, New York Giants and the University of Connecticut men's and women's basketball teams. He was active in sports and a basketball referee for many years.

He is survived by his daughters, Kathryn Wrenn of St. Albans, Vt., and Margaret and Mitch Cyr of Cumberland; and sons, Patrick and Dawn Donnelly of Glenburn and Timothy and Judy Donnelly of Cumberland. He leaves nine grandchildren, Mary and Nate Woodward, Peter and Jessica Wrenn, Allison Cyr, Melissa Cyr, Bridget Donnelly, Kelly Donnelly, Meghan Donnelly, Ian Donnelly and Keegan Donnelly; as well as three great-grandchildren, Daniel and Merrill Wrenn, and Sophia Woodward. He also is survived by his former daughter-in-law, Barbara Donnelly; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, James, Michael, Patrick, John and Joseph; and sisters, Katharine Lynch and Mary Sullivan. The family thanks the staff at Portland Center for Assisted Living, as well as Hospice of Southern Maine for their kind and compassionate care.

Calling hours will be held 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 1, at Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, and 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 8, at O'Neill Funeral Home, 742 Main St., Oakville, Conn., where a funeral service will be held 8 a.m. Saturday, March 9. The Liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. after the service Saturday at Saint Mary Magdalen Church, Oakville, Conn. Rites of committal will be after at Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury, Conn.
