BANGOR - Francis "Frank" P. McGarry, 86, died April 20, 2013. He was born June 14, 1926, in Orange, N.J., the son of John J. and Mary R. (Smith) McGarry.
Francis graduated from Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J. He worked for 14 years at a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson in New Brunswick, N.J. Francis was also employed for two years by a company in Wilmington, Del., and seven years as assistant to the vice president of finance for American Thread Company, Willimantic, Conn. In 1971 he moved to Maine and was vice president of finance for Penobscot Shoe Company, Old Town. He owned a counseling and consulting business until his retirement. During World War II
, he served as a research specialist with the U.S. Navy
. Francis was an active member of St. John Catholic Church and was a contributing member of the Bangor community and volunteered business expertise as a member of the Bangor Chamber of Commerce, Bangor Rotary Club
, Knights of Columbus, Hammond Street Senior Center, Community Health and Counseling Services and as a board member of St. Xavier's Home for the Elderly and Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. His family would like to express their deep appreciation to his physician, Dr. Vincent Michaud, his cardiologist, Dr. Alan Jansujwicz, their staff and the staff of Maine Veteran's Home for their compassionate care of him and his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, the former Anita Bell; two sons, Paul of Ithaca, N.Y., and Kenneth and wife, Linda, of Woodstock, Ga.; three daughters, Patricia and husband, Robert Clark, of Bangor, Nancy of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Louise of Ithaca, N.Y.; two granddaughters, Sarah and husband, Clay Branam, of Riverview, Fla., and Elizabeth of Bangor; and brother, Donald of Toms River, N.J. In addition to his parents, Francis is predeceased by brother, John of Northfield, N.J.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John Catholic Church, 207 York St., Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at St. John Church Fellowship Hall after the service. Interment will be at a later date.
