Eugene L. Rees

SANGERVILLE - Having left Miraflores for the Eternal Fields of Paradise, Eugene L. Rees, 70, died May 18, 2013, in Dover-Foxcroft, due to cancer complications. He was born Sept. 4, 1942, in Dover-Foxcroft, son of Harold and Maude-Doris (Rollins) Rees.

The eldest of five siblings, Gene was a go getter from the start. He took a paper route from 35 subscriptions to 125 and continued to expand the route, an entrepreneur at age seven. Upon high school graduation, Gene enrolled at the University of Maine at Orono, in 1960. He took five years to graduate, however, in his portfolio when he left were his Bachelor of Arts degree, Bachelor of Science degree, Master of Arts degree, Master of Science degree, Master of Arts in Teaching degree and Certificate of Advanced Science degree. He was especially proud to have been a member of the elite Phi Beta Kappa Scholastic Society. He later enrolled at the University of Maine Law School in Portland, where he lived with the dean, Edward S. Godfrey. It was in Portland where Gene met a red-haired, feisty, beautiful, young woman named Eleanor Ann Woodcock. After a lengthy courtship, they were married in 1968. As an adult, Gene served in several capacities, including school teacher, vice principal and construction. He also owned Guilford Dry Cleaners and his own apartment complex, as well as his lawn service. Eugene was known for his dry sense of humor, his intellect and his hobby of gardening, he was a master gardener. Eugene became a Christian late in life.

He leaves behind many relatives and friends, including his mother; his wife of 45 years, Eleanor (Woodcock) Rees; oldest son, James Rees; youngest son, Eugene Rees; and only daughter, Saundra (Rees) Haley and husband, Matthew; four grandchildren, James Rees, Alexander Rees, Eden Haley and Lily Haley; two sisters-in-law, Penny B. Rees and Shirley Rees; brother, Gary Rees and wife, Toni; sister, Diana Bowley and husband, Richard; many nieces and nephews; and special cousins, Linal Getchell, and wife, Carol, and Linal "Bud" Rees and wife, Barbara. He was predeceased by his father; and brothers, Col. Harold R. Rees Jr., and Kim R. Rees.
