CALAIS - Edward H. Cline, 86, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2013, surrounded by his family at his home. Edward was born March 9, 1927, in Lubec, son of the late Charles and Maude (McDowell) Cline.
Edward left high school to enter the U.S. Army
Air Corps to serve his country during World War II
. He then returned home and graduated from Lubec High School, and then attended the University of Maine, Orono, until reentering the U.S. Air Force
, serving in records and reports for air terminals. In September 1951, he married Edna Farmer of Lubec. In 1955, Edward started his insurance career with John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co., serving as a sales representative in Fitchburg, Mass., and Bangor. In 1962, he started with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. as a sales representative throughout Washington County until 1986. In 1987, he worked as a collections manager for St. Croix Federal Credit Union until he retired in 1989. Edward loved to stay active in his community. He served as a member of Maine Governor's Task Force on Child and Youth Services; Calais School Committee Union No. 106 where he served as committee chairman, 1979-1980; board of director for St. Croix Vocational Center, St. Stephen, New Brunswick; board of director of Washington County Handicapped Program for Beckett Center, Calais and Sunshine Workshop, Machias; was an advocate for handicapped persons in local nursing homes; board of director for Thelma Kilpatrick School, St. Stephen, New Brunswick; served as a Washington County commissioner; served on Calais City Council; and was a member of Washington Lodge No. 37 A.F. & A.M., Lubec.
In addition to his parents, Edward was predeceased by his loving wife, Edna; and two brothers, Ronald and Wilfred. Surviving are his companion, Nola Hough of Calais; 10 children, Cathryn Mitchell of Bath, Rebecca Harding of Calais, Christopher Cline of Calais, Michael Cline of Phippsburg, Timothy Cline and fiancée, Cheryl Frechette, of Windham, Wendy McBride and husband, Daniel, of St. Stephen, Clare Cline and husband, Elliott "Chip" Miller, of Yarmouth, Lori Ellis and husband, Michael, of Calais, Peter Cline and wife, Brandi, of Calais, and Lisa Cline of Casco; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and two on the way; sister, Mary Coggins and husband, Jed, of North Lubec; many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 5, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A celebration of Edward's life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Calais United Methodist Church, 849 Main St., Calais.
