Edward Ellsworth Southard Jr.

BAILEYVILLE - Edward Ellsworth Southard Jr., husband of 57 years to Edna Rita (Collins) Southard of Baring, died May 8, 2013, at Marshall's Nursing Home, Machias. He was born May 8, 1924, in Woodland, son of the late Edward Ellsworth Southard and Lida (Smith) Southard.

He was a World War II veteran, served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific and was a Purple Heart recipient. He also served in the U.S. Merchant Marine. He was a honorary member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, St. Petersburg Masonic Lodge.

Survived by his wife, Edna; son, Edward Ellsworth Southard III; two grandchildren, Charlotte Southard and Noah Southard; daughter-in-law, Carey Fox and daughter, Amanda O'Brien; special pets, Dixie and Oreo; five sisters, Helen Ward of Princeton, Evelyn Libby of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Luella Perkins of Fall River, Mass., Marie Southard of San Francisco and Ollie McConaghy of Fredericton, New Brunswick; sisters-in-law, Olive Collins, Evelyn Nixon and Ferne Collins; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Geraldine "Deannie" Hurd, Lida Cooper; and brother, Donald Southard.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at People's United Methodist Church, Baileyville. Family will receive relatives and friends after the service downstairs in the church for refreshments. Interment will be at a later date at Rolling Dam United Church Cemetery, Rolling Dam, New Brunswick. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to People's United Methodist Church, Baileyville; Meddybemps Church; Shriners Hospitals for Children; or a charity of one's choice would be appreciated by the family.
