Dorothy A. Wilkinson

GROTON, MASS. - Dorothy A. Wilkinson, 84, died Dec. 19, 2012, at The Atrium Senior Living Center, Chelmsford, Mass., with her family at her side. Dorothy was born March 8, 1928, in Albany, N.Y., daughter of David and Edith (Singleton) Midgley.

She grew up in Albany, N.Y., and met her future husband, J. Norman Wilkinson, aboard a ship on which he was serving as a British Merchant Marine. They were married Jan. 31, 1958, and were blessed to share nearly 54 years together. Dorothy earned her bachelor's degree from SUNY Albany and master's degrees from Ithaca College and the University of Michigan. She had a long career as a teacher at the secondary and college levels, most recently at the University of Maine, where she was a long-time instructor of speech communication. Dorothy and Norman moved to Wells in the 1990s, where both were very active in the community and the Wells Congregational church. Dorothy loved all animals, especially her cats, Emma and Parthia; and walking along the beach with her beloved Norman.

She was predeceased by her husband, Norman; and brother, David Alan Midgley. Survivors include her son, Norm Wilkinson and his wife, Debbie, of Groton, Mass.; daughter, Dr. Susan Wilkinson and her husband, James Schultz, of Omaha, Neb.; two grandchildren, Brandon and Nicole Wilkinson; and stepgrandson, Adam Schultz.

There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at the Congregational Church of Wells, 1695 Post Road, U.S. Route One, Wells, with the Revs. Linda Hirst and Charles Whiston officiating. Dorothy would be honored by donations made in her memory to American Alzheimer's Association - Maine Chapter, 383 U.S. Route One, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074 or the Rotary Club of Ogunquit, P.O.
