Dr. Dick Conrad Rice

CUMBERLAND FORESIDE - Dr. Dick Conrad Rice, 82, passed away at his home with his loving family at his side on August 28, 2013, following a long illness. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he was a son of Carl and Frances Roberts Rice.

During his lifetime Dick resided in Ohio and Maine: Farmington, Orono and Cumberland Foreside. Dick shared 63 years of marriage with his loving wife Jeannette (Urban) Rice. Dick and Jeannette both grew up on working farms in Ashtabula County, Ohio where they met in High School. Dick taught high school agriculture classes while earning his first advanced degree. Dick enjoyed a 15 year career in the Ohio Public School System as a teacher, principal and superintendent of schools. After earning his Doctorate Degree in Education at Ohio State University, Dick moved with his family of six children to Farmington, Maine in 1968. There he began his life long career at the University of Maine at Farmington as Dean of Education, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Professor. Nearing retirement in the 1990's, Dick left administration to teach the Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Education at UMF.

Dick had many students and lifelong friends in Farmington and Orono. For decades, his family spent summers on Embden Pond. Dick enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening and reading. His favorite getaway was a fishing camp he shared with many friends on Chesuncook Lake. Dick was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. While living in Farmington, he and Jeannette were activists in the Democratic Party.

Dick is survived by his wife Jeannette, six children, eleven grandchildren and one great grandson: David Rice and wife Pat, two daughters, Jessica and Allyson of Minnesota; Carolyn Fournier of East Waterboro, two daughters, Jillian of Springvale and Katherine of Limerick; Cheryl Hasenfus and husband Eric of Rome, three children Adam Hasenfus and wife Lizzie of Greenville, NC, Leah Hasenfus Smith and husband Lenny of Wilmington, NC, Shauna Hasenfus Myles and husband Ryan of Scarborough; Joyce Bell and husband Steve of Yarmouth; Bill Rice and wife Karen, two children, Danielle and Justin of Cumberland; Laura Rice and two children Derrick and Sabel Pratt of Farmington; and great grandson Gabriel Owen Boutilier who lives with his parents Sabel Pratt and John Boutilier.

Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday September 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. at A.T. Hutchins Funeral & Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland.
